Rolling laundry cart: what it is, how to choose, and 3 that work
A rolling laundry cart is a basket or bag held in a frame on castors, with the rim at roughly waist height instead of on the floor. You load and unload it standing, and push the full load to the machine rather than carrying it. It is sold as a rolling hamper, a laundry cart, a laundry sorter or a laundry basket with wheels, and the tall single-basket kind is often labelled "no-bend".

How to choose a rolling laundry cart (laundry cart on wheels, rolling hamper)
Every one of them rolls, and every one of them is taller than a basket on the floor. What differs is the height you actually reach into, whether the wheels lock, and how much of the cart is at the height you were trying to avoid.
- Basket height, not overall height. The number on the box is usually the frame. What matters is the rim you put your hands over: about 75 to 80 cm suits most adults standing, and a shorter person will find a 90 cm rim means reaching up and down into a well they cannot see the bottom of.
- One tier or two. A two-tier cart holds more and lets you sort as you go, but the lower basket sits back down near the height you were avoiding. If bending is the whole problem, a single tall basket does more for you than twice the capacity.
- Lockable wheels. Four free castors will roll away as you lean on the rim, which matters if the cart is also taking some of your weight. Locks are worth more than smooth rolling here.
- How the liner comes out. Most carts have a canvas or mesh bag inside the frame. Emptying by lifting the bag puts the full weight back in your arms, which undoes the point; tipping the whole cart into the machine, or wheeling it to the drum and transferring by handfuls, does not.
- Where it lives when empty. A tall frame does not fold under a bed. Some are collapsible, some come apart, and most simply stand in the corner of a room. Decide where before you buy, because a cart that lives in the garage will not be used.
- Thresholds. Small castors stop dead at a raised door sill or a thick carpet edge. If the route to the machine has one, look for larger wheels or plan to lift the front over it.
Who should skip it. If the laundry is upstairs and the machine is down, a cart solves the wrong half of the journey — it does not go down stairs. If floor space is tight, a tall frame that cannot be folded may cost you more than it gives, and a basket on a chair does much of the same job for nothing.

- The height of the rim you reach into. Around 75–80 cm puts it near waist height for most adults standing, which is the whole point of the cart.
- Capacity
- How much it holds before it needs emptying. Bigger is not always better: a full 110 L cart is heavy to start rolling and too tall to see into for a shorter person.
- Lockable wheels
- Wheels that lock stop the cart rolling away while you lean on it or load it one-handed. Without locks it needs a wall or a corner to work against.

How tall should a rolling laundry hamper be?
The rim you reach into wants to be around waist height for you, which for most adults is 75 to 80 cm. Measure from the floor to your wrist with your arm hanging down and aim near that. Taller is not better: a rim above your waist means lifting clothes up and out rather than sliding them.
Do the wheels really help, or is it just the height?
They do different jobs. The height removes the bend while you load and unload; the wheels remove the carry. If your problem is only picking the basket up off the floor, a basket on a chair fixes it for nothing. If carrying a full load is the problem, the wheels are what you are paying for.
Can a rolling cart go over a door threshold?
Small castors catch on a raised sill and on the metal strip between carpet and tile. Most carts will go over with a lift at the front, which is a small lift rather than a full basket, but if the route has several thresholds a cart with larger wheels is worth looking for.
Is a two-tier laundry sorter better than a single tall basket?
Only if sorting is your problem. Two tiers give you more capacity and separate whites from colours, but the bottom basket sits low again, so a good part of the cart is back at the height you were avoiding. For bending, one tall basket does more.
